Who Really Weakens America?

Cross-posted from Moral Questions Weblog.

The irony of Karl Rove's now infamous commentary on liberals last week is in how much the truth is the diametric opposite of what he suggested.  Since I've been spending so much time lately blogging about conservative psychology, I would be remiss not to comment on the dysfunctional militarism of radcons.  It this militarism that is one of the chief reasons it is conservatives that weaken America, not liberals.

One of the defining traits of the current conservative mindset is a truly bizarre self-identification with the military.  This self-identification has a highly protective attitude toward the military and its purrogotives.  It also has created an "us vs. them" mentality in them, were it is impossible of people like Rove to comprehend how liberals could deal effectively in military policies.

This is why John Kerry's war heroics did not serve him well; in fact, they actually did him harm.  The idea of an ideologically liberal war hero as the Democratic candidate for President simply could not be tolerated in the mind of the radcons.  It did not connect him to radcons.  Instead, it only drove them into a deep ideological fanaticism, where they were willing to take as gospel the most obscene inventions and absurd fantasies.  Most of this, I assume, is derived from grudges they are still holding about the 60's New Left, an ideology that has long since disappeared and which bears virtually no relevance to modern day Liberalism.  But that is a different post.

Along with the bizarre self-identification inherent in radical conservatism, there has evolved and even more dangerous attitude: a tendency to overestimate our military's power. And this where is becomes clear that those who believe themselves to be the finest friends of the military turn out actually to be their worst enemies.  They have sent them into a country without accurate intelligence about its true threat status, they didn't bother to plan for how to win the peace there, and they sent them without adequate troops or supplies.  And they did all of this because it simply never occurred to them that our military might not be able to accomplish their mission under the given circumstances.  And then when the leaders of the military told them they needed to plan more and add more troops, they held them in contempt as Cassandras.  Fine friends indeed.

But Radical Conservatism has even deeper problems inherent to it, and it is in these that we see the truth mirrored back at Rove.  For in arrogantly rejecting out of hand the legitimacy of Liberalism's perspectives, it harms our national discourse and makes any attempt at reaching a national consensus futile.  In so doing, it weakens America, dividing it and polarizing it and catalyzing it to focus more on partisan bickering than on the legitimate problems we face.

The GOP is LOOTING AMERICAS FUTURE (none / 0)

They couldn't care less about our future..

And to satisfy their grandiose narcissistic fantasies of empire, we are sacrificing our ECONOMIC future.. building bombs and missiles when we should be building schools and funding students to educate in them..

Instead, the GOP gives tax breaks to companies that export our jobs and technology so they can make a dishonest buck..

Taking us all to the cleaners, once again..

They need to convict these theives.. nothing is worse than stealing from the people, from children, from US..

Lies..... (none / 0)

Everywhere you look, its appearances over substance..

When you poke a little deeper, you realize, that in so many ways, the GOP is damaging our national security..

profoundly..

Who do you think would be targets of nuclear terrorism? The Democratic cities.. the blue states.. with their higher population densities..

Something like that would be worse than your worse nightmare..

But they are NOT MAKING STOPPING IT THE HIGHEST PRIORITY AT ALL....

Look at the GOP 'energy bill', which weakens protections against exporting of highly enriched uranium just so one corporation can make more money on medical isotopes..

Nowhere does it improve our energy independence.. It also makes it much easier for South American ethanol producers to import cheap ethanol, undermining American farmers.

Which reminds me, we need to support the Schumer amendment to the GOP energy bill.. to stop this change in HEU policy that they want to make.

One might almost think that the GOP leadership wanted to enable terrorists to get nuclear materials.. because that is arguably the effect of reducing this restriction on exporting HEU, which has been in place since the early 90s..

Money being spent on tax breaks and military (none / 0)

is the money that instead of lining some fat cats pocket, could be training Americans and helping build infrastructure here so that in 20 years when machines do all the low skilled jobs, American engineers will be able to work.. instead of seeing all the remaining decent jobs migrate to China and India..

Moores Law says that computers double in computing power for teh same cost every 18 months.. That will make computers cheaper for almost EVERY NON CREATIVE TASK before long..

Its simple economics.. silicon=cheap, meat=expensive..

Plus, machines do a better job (better quality control) and with networking, what one learns, they all learn...

Unless your job REQUIRES MEGA CREATIVITY, the chances are good you will lose it...
