August 28th 2008: Obama Acceptance Speech

August 28th will be the final day of the 2008 Democratic National Convention. The keynote speaker will be the Democratic nominee for president. Unless Hillary Clinton soon acquires the ability to perform miracles, that nominee giving the acceptance speech is going to be Barack Obama.

Senator Obama will give his acceptance speech on August 28, the forty-fifth anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

And he will give a historic speech. He will be the first black man in this country's entire history to give such a speech

Assuming he wins in November. Obama will be inaugurated less than three weeks before Abraham Lincoln's two-hundredth birthday.

The symbolism of the first major party African-American presidential nominee accepting his party's endorsement on the day when King, four-and-a-half decades earlier, had called on the nation to fulfill its long-deferred ideals, and of the first African-American president being inaugurated less than a month before the nation celebrates the bicentennial of the "Great Emancipator" should be enough to bring tears to the eyes of even hardened political cynics.

But the deep historical significance of what is currently happening goes even farther.

In so many ways, Barack Obama is a realization of King's dream.

Thank you. (2.00 / 1)

Brilliant diary.

I'm tempted to take that day off work.

Carter is missing, right?

In any case, the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920.  Had Hillary come out on top, the convention would surely have been moved up to capitalize on that equally historic and symbolic coincidence.

In any case, great post!  I think I might be starting to feel a little inspired here...

Re: August 28th 2008 (none / 0)

I'm getting a little misty reading that diary. Great job!

I know both candidates have had to put up with various prejudices and "isms", but the way Obama has just brushed off the bigots and tackled challenges head on reminds me of the way Jackie Robinson never whined about the oppression he was facing, and yet had a habit of ripping line drives off the foreheads of particularly bigotted pitchers. The fact he gets to deliver this speech on the anniversary of King's is truely remarkable.

Re: August 28th 2008: Obama Acceptance Speech (none / 0)

For the first time in my adult life...

I'm really proud of the democratic party.

I'll be allowed to vote for a candidate I whole-heartedly support.

I voted for two of the men shown above... but my heart felt there were better alternatives... still I held my nose and voted for the democrat.

I sincerely hope Hillary's supporters return the favor: vote for Obama.

If you vote for McCain you deserve 4 more years in Hell.

If you stay home, you don't matter.

If Hillary runs as an independent... then we get more drama than we could ever hope for.

May you live in good times.

First go to www.imageshack.us where you can host the pictures.

Then once, you have the url direct link for the picture you hosted

Copy the link

Then what I do is go to my Daily Kos account since you can't do it easy here.

On my 'Write New Diary' function at the bottom click on where it says 'Link'.

Paste the image url in the field and don't forget to press the 'image' button, now press add.

There you have, automatically all the brackets and details for your image.

Simply copy all of it.

Open your diary at Mydd, then simply paste that in body

Voila ....your image.
